Love, Pet Rocks, And Cacti: Inside Taylor Swift’s Opalite Music Video

By Emma Rassi (Y8)

On February 6th, Taylor Swift released the playful, 90s rom-com-inspired music video for her song “Opalite”, released in October 2025. The video premiered on Spotify Premium and Apple Music on February 6th, with a delayed release on YouTube and other streaming platforms on February 8th. The video features Domhnall Gleeson as her co-star and also features snippets of scenes with other celebrities from when she promoted “The Life of a Showgirl” on the Graham Norton show last October .  She also released two extended versions of the video featuring dance lessons, behind-the-scenes and other celebrity interactions available exclusively on streaming platforms.

Our school administration has seen fit to make this video unavailable on our school accounts. For those interested, copy the link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FVF-9KQiPo) and have look on a personal account.

The video is retro 1990s-inspired, starting off with a fake commercial for the “opalite spray”, a magical potion that transforms loneliness into love. In the story, Taylor Swift befriends a pet rock and Domhnall Gleeson, a cactus. They both see the commercial and use the opalite spray to find each other. They turn into a loving and cheesy couple that do everything together; they are both exactly what the other needs.

Personally, I love the dorky charm and humour in this video, and it is exactly what makes Taylor Swift a genius. It is so creative and genuinely fun to watch. One of my and many other fans’ favourite things to do while watching a music video of Taylor’s is to look for the clues or “easter eggs” that she adds in as a fun thing for fans to find. And let me tell you, there are so many if you look closely. I also love the incredible attention to detail with every little thing being thought of to make this music video what it is, for example the stores in the mall scene having cute names like “sweeter than a peach” and “Dear Protege” which are lyrics from two different songs on her album or the backup singers and dancers from her most recent tour “The Eras Tour” featured as well.

Overall, this is one of the best music videos I’ve ever watched, and it really shows off her capability to make original, yet incredible work, and it is a 10/10 – and you should definitely spare a few minutes to watch it, you will be amused.
