The book the Way of Kings is the first book in the Stormlight archive, which excellently displays a fantasy setting in a mature and fascinating light. The book follows 3 characters: Kaladin who was a former soldier turned slave, Shallan a scholar who hides many secrets, and Dalinar a nobleman who sees visions that urge him to make a change for his kingdom. As well as a sub character shrouded in mystery, Szeth.
This book shifts perspectives between each character, creating a balanced narrative that fully explores a diverse world full of conflict and ancient submerged knowledge. Sanderson is known for his fantastic world building which fully delves into topics such as leadership, morality, trauma, and faith.
I personally found this book incredibly inspiring, as each character undergoes a transformation of character that felt very genuine. I also thought it made the reader question various moral dilemmas throughout the book, which sparked introspective reflection on our own life choices.
Overall, the Way of Kings is an excellently written fantasy book which delves into many different perspectives and scopes, giving the reader a well-rounded story to binge. Personally, I enjoyed this book for its world building more than anything else, as it did an excellent job at transporting you into the diverse land of Roshar which explores a multitude of cultures that draw important similarities to the cultures of our world. It would be a great read for anyone who is interested in more detailed books such as the Lord of the Rings.
