Social Media: Helpful or Harmful?

By Sophie Wood (Y8)

Imagine waking up and checking your phone before you even get out of bed. For many people, social media is part of their daily routine without them even realising it. It connects us together, entertains us, and sometimes completely takes over our days.

There is no doubt that social media has benefits. It makes communication much easier, especially for teenagers who rely on it to stay in touch with their friends. It also allows people to express themselves freely and find communities where they feel understood. Social media can even be educational, helping people who use it learn new skills, follow the news, and discover new interests.

However, the negatives are hard to ignore. Social media often encourages comparison, making people feel like their lives are not exciting or perfect enough. Seeing edited photos and unrealistic standards can really damage confidence and self-esteem. It is also extremely distracting, affecting focus, sleep, and productivity overall. The pressure to constantly reply and stay online can cause unnecessary stress.

In my opinion, social media is useful, but it is not as harmless as it seems. It needs strict limits. Without control, it can affect mental health and daily life more than everyone realises. If used carefully, social media can be positive, but it should never control how we feel or see ourselves. Learning when to turn it off is just as important as learning to turn it on.
