The Cliché

By Aarika Das Panda (Y12)

You had me at hello

and I’m sure you left at goodbye.

Whatever happened in between

I’m not very sure.

Maybe my heart skipped a beat,

when you committed the mere action

of acknowledging me

and looking me in the eyes.

They say that absence makes

the heart grow fonder,

not sure if my heart is doing so

when you’re near, I want more.

I’m aware of your feelings at present

yet unsure of your future intentions

it’s stupid to think I could change your mind

but optimism is key.

Maybe Aphrodite is looking down at us

with pity flooding her eyes,

as she prepares to send Eros down

with some particularly convincing arrows,

and instructions not to miss again

or maybe he shot the wrong one

or maybe she’s letting me know it’s not worth it

and I ought to pack my bags and move on.

In my mind’s eye,

Aphrodite resembles you so,

your lovely face, and flirty eyes

and smile when you said hello.

Or was it hey? All I know

is I melted into a tiny puddle

and wished thats how I would stay

until you finally left.

Until we meet again.
