Forget the purple and heartbroken aesthetic, Olivia Rodrigo is officially back, but instead of devastated lyrics, it’s clear she’s in love. On April 17 2026, she dropped the first single to her upcoming album “You seem pretty sad for a girl so in love”. The single marks one of the first times Olivia Rodrigo hasn’t written about heartbreak and instead shows just how in love she is (even though the song is called “drop dead”).
The song is very different from Olivia Rodrigo’s past albums, and fans are loving it. One of the main reasons you can see a big shift from her past two albums, “SOUR” and “GUTS”, is that those two albums are very similar, from the purple theme and the four-lettered titles, it was Olivia’s trademark – and now it’s completely the opposite. The song replaces her grungy and sad vibe with lively and dreamy, and a lot of fans are hoping the album will be the same.
Another one of the many things Olivia Rodrigo is famous for is her lyricism, the fans are obsessing over some of the lyrics, including the catchy hook from the chorus “One night I was bored in bed and stalked you on the internet” or “You look so pretty like an angel on the walls of Versailles”, the lyrics are so incredibly relatable and fun to listen to that there is no question why the song is as viral as it is. It’s also very much an earworm; I’ve had it stuck in my head since it came out.
The music video is a whole event in itself; it features her running around the Palace of Versailles in France, which pays homage to the lyrics in her song. She is in a little babydoll dress, and it perfectly captures the whole vibe of the song and album.
Because of this single, Olivia Rodrigo is now the first artist in history to have the lead singles from her first three studio albums all debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following “driver’s license” and “vampire,” “drop dead” secured her perfect streak.
The song earned 10.7 million streams on its first day on Global Spotify. This was not only the biggest debut of Olivia’s entire career but also the highest first-day streaming total for any female artist in 2026 so far.
In conclusion, this is very different from Olivia Rodrigo’s normal vibe, but I (and many others) absolutely love it. With this song, Olivia proved she can rule the charts happily just as well as she did sad. Now we just have to survive the wait until June 12th for the full album.
