Following an unforgettable five-day trip to London, twelve of our Year 12 students returned with incredible stories and friendships that truly embody the spirit of FOOTBALL4iIMPACT. As part of their CAS project, these students embraced themes of unity, overcame cultural differences, and connected through their shared passion for football.
Our Year 12 students, accompanied by Ms. Lalaz and Mr. Donovan, were warmly welcomed by the West Ham Foundation team, along with 8 students from the United Lisbon International School. Despite meeting for the first time, all three groups quickly bonded, both on and off the field. “The people we met on this trip made the experience truly special,” said Oisin, reflecting on the connections formed. Through an academic lens, the trip achieved a remarkable balance of lifelong learning, meaningful friendships, and the connecting spirit of football.
The mission statement of FOOTBALL4iMPACT is “teaching teenagers life skills through football,” and this was most definitely present throughout the stay in London. This mission can be evaluated into two aspects: fostering lifelong friendships through football and taking the initiative to lead while developing new skills within a group.
The first aspect was fulfilled through numerous training sessions and matches, in which everyone collaborated regardless of differences in skill levels and playstyles. “I loved training with the players every day and experiencing their way of life,” Erik shared. Similarly, Leo expressed, “I enjoyed the training and the valuable life lessons we learned.”
Beyond the pitch, the group explored London, visiting landmarks like the London Stadium and attending a Premier League match. “Exploring London while collaborating with the people we met was amazing,” said Leonhard, while Aleks described the trip as “absolutely unbelievable.” Henrik reflected on the experience, saying, “I enjoyed the experience and connecting with others.”
The students participated in workshops on financial literacy and mental health, gaining valuable tools to navigate challenges both on and off the field. They had the opportunity to meet ex-professional players who shared inspiring lessons on resilience and personal growth. “The trip taught me important life lessons both on and off the football pitch,” said Sulaiman, while Ethan called it “the perfect way to blend football with life lessons.”
For Joshua, the trip was “a truly beneficial experience that helped us form connections and friendships.” Shehryaar highlighted, “It was an awesome experience combining our love for football with other schools.” Harry summed up this collaborative aspect: “It was great to learn from the West Ham Foundation players.”
The FOOTBALL4iMPACT boys are eagerly preparing for a reunion next year, where they will host the West Ham Foundation and Lisbon school. Together, they will continue to build relationships, develop communication skills, and support the cause through fundraising activities. “Through football, we established meaningful connections and friendships,” said Alessandro, looking forward to future opportunities to build on this experience.
Together, we’re spreading the message of unity, leadership, and lifelong learning through football.
