In Fair Verona Where the Scene was set

The girls football team went to a four-day competition in Verona, Italy, late last month. This trip was the first in Verona, Italy for some time because of Covid-19. Sadly, not all the players are chosen to compete. Players’ experience, as well as a player’s level of focus and effort during practice, are reasons players are chosen.

The team went by train with two coaches, said Coach Gregory Whibley, and one chaperone, Maia Camp, a mother to a player on the trip. Teams came from all over Europe, and one from East Africa. All teams stayed in a hotel next door to the competition pitches used.

At the end of many of the Verona trips, there are tears. If the team loses, they might be quieter on the return home. But, if they have won, they are more excited and noisy! In the end, our team came in third. They all had a lot of fun and it was a great experience. Caitlin Daly, one of the players who went to Verona, said, “I really liked Verona because of the freedom we had at night and the matches were well organized, but the pitches were quite bad and bumpy and the boys got to play mostly on the good pitches, but not the girls.”
