an unlikely love story by Sophia Pell from our Middle School Writers’ Corner!
It was a bright spring day. The trees were growing blossoms and there were cherries everywhere. As the badger stepped into the sun he could feel the soft wind on his fur and as he looked up at the sky he felt happy. Of course he had not expected anything out of the ordinary. He was just going out for a nice spring picnic to eat his freshly prepared cucumber sandwiches, when he saw her. She was very lightly tanned, her skin shone golden in the bright sun. She was an apple. And when he saw her his heart skipped a beat.
As he stared into her eyes he immediately fell for her. Of course he had never expected to fall in love. Badger had always been very cold toward everyone and as he walked toward her he trembled under the weight he was holding
“Hello, “ Badger grumbled, “ how .. are you doin..g”
Silence. The badger waited for about a minute, but nobody responded. Badger was starting to get very nervous. Why wasn’t the apple responding ? Did she not like him, did she find him annoying ? But as he stared at her she seemed to smile, and then Badger knew he could not live life without her !
The next few weeks Badger spent most of his time with Apple ( who he had now decided to call Palomé as she would not tell him her name. They went to the beach (which was also his cousin’s back garden ), they visited the Apple Lisa ( who was painted by the famous artist Apanero Depinci) and of course they went to see the Anira falls ( where Palomé nearly died , but Badger saved her just in time). After about a year of going out with Palomé, Badger decided to do a big thing : he was going to propose.
Badger had made the table decorated with flowers and decorations of every colour of the rainbow. He had made himself up and he was looking very smart ( the first time he had actually gelled his hair). Once he had gotten ready he went to fetch the apple, who had been lying down on the grass (not doing anything). As he walked up to her he felt the smartest and proudest of his whole life.
“ Palomé, will you make me the happiest badger alive by being my wife?” Badger said .
Silence, Silence and silence is what met him. He looked down at the apple and he noticed something. A crack on the side of her head.
“ Palomé,“ he whispered.
“ Palomé !“ he squealed.
As Badger went to pick her up, the most unfortunate thing happened !
A crow swept down from the sky and snached Palomé. Badger howled and burst into tears. He had only ever wanted her. She was his true love, and he would never get to see her again. It was horrible!
But of course he should have known that it would never last. The apple was too fragile for the life of a handsome badger like himself. Sadly, he guessed he would never be in love again. Pock! Badger looked up and then suddenly – a thump. “Owww,” Badger groaned, but as he opened his eyes he could not believe it! He had fallen in love again – with a cherry !
