movie review by Katerina Schneider Y12
1. The Soundtrack
From “Hypnotize” to “Cruel to be Kind” to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, the phenomenal soundtrack featured in this movie is reason alone to watch it!
2. Kat Stratford being the icon she is
Any iconic movie needs an iconic main character – and, not to be dramatic, but Kat Stratford might be one of the best things that has happened to the cinematic world, or for that matter, to the world in general. Her quick-witted sarcasm, feminism, and independence are only some of the many things we admire and love her for.
3. The “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” Scene
Easily one of the best scenes of the movie – Patrick’s legendary cover of Frankie Valli’s song is absolutely perfect, his escape from the police unapologetically hilarious, and his smile…brighter than my future.
4. Shakespeare
This one’s for the English teachers and literature lovers: you may not know that 10 Things I Hate About You was actually inspired by Shakespeare’s “The Taming of The Shrew”!
5. Bianca absolutely battering Joey
As she should…although of course violence is never the answer, but Bianca finally giving Joey what he deserved made all of our hearts a little bit happy. Obviously, though, violence is never the answer.
6. It’s forever funny
As someone who has watched this movie no less than 8 times, I’m convinced that it will never not make me laugh – Kat and Bianca’s dad, the English teacher, the principal, Kat’s comebacks and her banter with Patrick…the movie is packed with funny moments and characters!
7. Kat and Patrick’s love-hate relationship
Although neither of them actually like each other at the start, they both eventually get their “enemies to lovers” moment. The constant bickering and banter between two people who are undeniably meant to be together (although it may take them a while to realize it) only amplifies their chemistry.
8. The clothes
The outfits in 10 things I hate about you make all of us wish we lived in that era; whether it’s Bianca’s sundresses and cute halter tops or Kat’s cargo pants and leather jackets – the clothes in this movie scream ‘90’s’.
9. Heath Ledger
Need I say more; the smile, the accent, the charisma…Heath Ledger’s portrayal of Patrick Verona was absolutely flawless, so much so that this movie was the start of his worldwide fame and marvelous (though sadly far too short) acting career.
10. Kat’s Poem
I’m convinced 99% of the teenage girl population would be able to recite this poem in their sleep, and for good reason; despite being written in slightly doubtful iambic pentameter, this poem is just so perfect in every imaginable way.
