On March 31st, the FOOTBALL4iMPACT CAS group at La Châtaigneraie School had the amazing chance to host Sally Freedman, a well recognised feminist sports author, for a special assembly with Year 9 students. The event, which took place in the primary aula from 10:35 to 11:05, was all about discussing how sports and gender equality are connected.
The FOOTBALL4iMPACT group had been looking for someone who could speak to students about the challenges women face in sports. After reaching out to Freedman, who is well-known for her book Get Your Tits Out for the Lads, they were thrilled when she agreed to come. The book is about how women in sports often face sexism and unfair treatment, which was exactly the kind of issue the group wanted to highlight. They were hoping the Year 9 students would leave the assembly thinking more about gender and sports.
The students were hooked right from the beginning as Freedman shared her story. She didn’t just talk about her book but also explained her journey and how she became passionate about gender equality in sports. She really got the students’ attention, and it wasn’t just a lecture but also a conversation that made people think. Freedman was honest and direct, which made a tough topic more approachable. The students seemed to enjoy the talk and left the assembly with a new perspective on how women are treated differently in the world of sports.
After the assembly, the FOOTBALL4iMPACT group had the chance to sit down with Freedman for an interview. They asked questions about her life, how she started writing, and why she felt it was so important to speak out on issues like sexism in sports. Freedman’s answers were thoughtful and gave the group a lot to think about as she talked about the challenges she faced as a feminist in a male-dominated field and how important it is to keep pushing for change.
The event turned out to be a huge success, it really helped students think about gender equality in sports. The FOOTBALL4iMPACT group is proud to have been part of such a meaningful event. It gave students the chance to learn and be inspired from someone who is working to make sports a more inclusive place for everyone.
Freedman’s visit was inspiring, and hopefully left everyone in the room with a sense of motivation to continue fighting for equality. The FOOTBALL4iMPACT group is more committed than ever to using sports as a platform for social change, and they’re looking forward to taking this conversation further. The event definitely made a lasting impact, and the students are now more aware of the importance of equality in sports.
